We all want make the great first impression. No matter if it is meeting someone in person, or online.
Headshot and personal branding photography can be used as an effective tool introducing you as a professional. Let's try to work out which is best for you.
Headshot sessions
Headshot sessions are usually quite short and result in one or a few portraits. These photo shoots are frequently booked by entrepreneurs, freelancers, models, actors and corporate industry. Headshots can be published at ‘about me’/team page, profile photos on LinkedIn, in a variety of marketing materials or even book covers. Models and actors will need them for portfolio or auditions.
As the name suggests a headshot is usually a portrait that shows your head and shoulders. However, a three quarter or full length crops are often required by the clients. When you discuss your needs with the photographer, you will decide which one is perfect for you. Personally, I would suggest a three quarter shot for a website banner as a close-up would be too overwhelming for your audience. On the other hand, you would want to make the most of the space of the portrait thumbnail at LinkedIn, thus a head and shoulders crop is a good choice here.
The same rules apply when deciding on the location. You may need a clean background studio shot, or an outdoor portrait with a non-descriptive environment. Studio photo shoot on a clean white or grey background will create a more formal look. Whereas location session will be a bit casual. Just talk to your photographer, and I am sure that together you will find the best option for you.
Personal branding
Personal branding sessions are usually more elaborate than headshots. They can be booked by a variety of professionals and business owners. You may need a branding session if you are a lawyer, a writer, a chef, a personal development coach etc. You w end up with a full collection of promotional images adding context to your personal brand and business. What is more, you can be introduced as a professional within different situations like speaking at the conference or dealing with clients. You also get the chance to show your personality and values. The scope is much wider than at a headshot session.
Your personal branding photo shoot should start from a detailed planning. Think about your brand and what type of message you want to send to your audience. Additionally, you should consider your marketing strategy. Will you need images for your blog, social media platforms or printed materials like business cards or brochures? These are all the things you should look at before you decide to book your session. You will want to make the most of your images, so please plan carefully.
Branding photo shoot can take place in the studio and in different locations. You will definitely want to be photographed in a variety of outfits, showing your ‘true brand voice and personality’. You may want to showcase products or services that you offer, and the best way to present it, is within the context. How do you interact with your clients? Maybe you want to show some behind the scenes photos? Maybe you want to add some props like coffee or a laptop? If they are a regular part of your everyday work, add them without hesitation. Your business is unique, thus, it requires a unique approach.
